- What is ITP Choice?
- Clayton State's Information Technology Program requires all students to have on demand access to a notebook computer for academic work. ITP Choice was implemented in August 2001 as phase 2 of ITP. Phase 1 required students to pay a $300 technology fee and were provided a university owned notebook computer. ITP Choice gives students the ability to choose from any vendor, access the internet from any provider, and the tech fee is significantly reduced.
- Am I required to have a laptop?
- All students enrolled in classes at CSU are required to have on demand access to a notebook computer for academic usage while inside the classrooms. A student is responsible for using the machine in class to take online tests, and access other content via the network. The student is not required to own the machine, only to have access to one as required by faculty.
- Does the required laptop have to meet any requirements?
- Yes. The ITP Choice defines the mininum hardware requirements that all laptops have to meet based on the student's intended major. Because the minimum specifications will vary based on the major, student are advised to consult the "Notebook Configurations" section of ITP Choice. If the machine meets all the requirements outline by the ITP Choice website, the HUB will be able to install the software required for classes at CSU.
Please see the HUB FAQ "What version of Microsoft Windows do I need?" for information on Operating System requirements.
- Where can I purchase / rent a laptop?
- Clayton State does not maintain any type of vendor list for sales or rentals of laptop computers. CSU's preferred vendors include the following companies, however the student is not limited to this selection.
If you are interested in purchasing a laptop, please keep in mind that Dell and Lenovo / IBM are preferred vendors, and provided the machine is under warranty, the HUB will be able to replace parts on these machines.
- Is a warranty important for a laptop?
- A warranty is highly recommended for all laptop computers. Because of the small size of laptops and because of its high amount of use and complexity, laptops are known like all electronics, to fail. The average cost to replace a laptop motherboard (the main component of any laptop) is half of the cost of the laptop. There are also additional costs for labor and shipping on this replacement work if the machine is not under warranty. Because of the high costs, students are highly recommended to get the longest warranty possible.
- Where can I get help with my laptop?
- If you need assistance with your laptop, feel free to contact the HUB. The HUB will troubleshoot a wide range of technical issues including software and hardware problems at the Service Counter (first floor of the University Center). If a student needs software assistance and training, they should feel free to visit the HUB's Software Support location (first floor of the library building). The HUB can also install certain software for students as outlined on the HUB's website under the Services page.
- Is the HUB able to work on any laptops?
- The HUB can look at any machine and troubleshoot software and hardware problems. If the problem is software, we can re-install the software for no additional charge. If the problem is hardware, the HUB can replace the part provided the following conditions are met:
- The machine must be a Dell or Lenovo / IBM laptop
- The machine must still be under warranty
- The student must give the HUB consent to work on the machine
- What does the technology fee in my tuition cover?
- The technology fee ($50.00) included in your tuition covers costs for the following services on one laptop per semester:
- License aquisition for the Microsoft Office software suite.
- License aquisition for the F-Secure antivirus software package.
- Technical support provided by the HUB locations and on the telephone (678) 466-HELP (4357)
- Internet access while you are on campus
- Where can I get software installed?
- Software can be installed in the Software Support location (first floor of the library building). The week prior to classes and the first week of every semester, Software Support switches to an appointment only basis for installation of software. Once the appointment only phase of the semester passes, Software Support returns to a walk-up basis.
